Massive MIMO is a promising technology for the 5th generation (5G) mobile communication systems. When uplink (UL) channel estimation results are used for downlink (DL) massive MIMO transmission, UL channel estimation errors degrade the performance of DL massive MIMO transmission. To reduce the channel estimation errors, a channel estimation method using the channel sparsity in beam space has been studied. This method (hereinafter referred to as “beam space channel estimation (BSCE)”) can reduce the estimation errors by setting the channel estimates of non-dominant beams to zeros. In conventional BSCE, a DFT matrix is used for antenna-to-beam space transformation of channel estimates. In this report, we propose a BSCE using multiple DFT matrices which form beams in mutually different directions to increase beams and to improve the channel estimation accuracy. We also propose a non-zero beam selection method to prevent the directions of non-zero beams from being limited to a specific angular range. Simulation results show that the proposed method using 4 DFT matrices improves cell throughput performance by 53% compared with not using BSCE and by 24% compared with conventional BSCE when the SNR of UL reference signal is 0 dB. |
