Processing for removing haze such as fog and mist superimposed on digital images is called dehazing. When dehazing systems are applied to actual applications such as video surveillance and in-vehicle cameras, it is necessary to implement a high-performance dehazing algorithm which can handle video streams at a processing speed of 30 [fps] or more on a low-cost portable embedded device. In this study, we propose a fast and high-performance dehazing algorithm suitable for embedded implementation. Furthermore, by optimizing its hardware implementation on an embedded target board with GPU, we achieve the above-mentioned requirement for processing speed. As a result of verification, a practical processing speed of more than 40 [fps] was accomplished and high-quality dehazing results were obtained compared with typical dehazing methods. |
