A countermeasure against camrip using the phase modulation
Toshiki Sasazaki, Tatsuya Mori (Waseda Univ.) ICSS2017-81
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Camrip, which aims to bootleg record a movie projected on a large screen, is a well-known and serious problem as it easily evades DRM mechanism and violates the copyrights of content holders. In this work, we propose a countermeasure against Camrip. The key idea is to make use of Moir'e, which can be generated by superimposing periodic pixel patterns with the phase modulation. That is, by superimposing a prepared pixel pattern and the pattern of color filter array used for camera devices, we can generate an image in which the prepared image (such as a warning message) becomes visible through the camera, but is invisible for a human who watches the generated image. We expect that embedding such a hidden warning message into a movie may suppress the damages caused by Camrip.
