Real-Time Artifact Reduction Using Sliding-Window Analysis for Real Data: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study

(in English) Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an effective neuroimaging technique, which facilitates its real-time application to a wide variety of fields. However, it is difficult to estimate true brain activity from fNIRS raw signals because of task-related scalp-hemodynamics, which is a specific artifact. To prevent the negative effects of scalp-hemodynamics in real-time, we proposed a real-time ShortPCA GLM (rt-ShortPCA GLM) with sliding-window analysis (SWA). At first, we executed an experiment to obtain the fNIRS real data which subjects performed movement tasks with their hands and fingers, then we applied the proposed method to the data. Adjusted $R^2$, which represents GLM model fitting, was significantly higher than the conventional methods. However, estimation error was not significant. By off-line analysis, it is suggested that the estimation error of the proposed method could be higher than the conventional method when the samples have the larger peak amplitude of cerebral-hemodynamics than scal-hemodynamcs.
