Effect of voluntary paced breathing on non-REM sleep index of Hsi

(in English) Electrocardiographic sleep index of Hsi that reflects the spectral power concentration of high-frequency heart rate variability component increases at sleep onset and thereafter during non-REM sleep. It is unknown, however, whether the increase in Hsi is caused by the transition of respiratory mode from voluntary control during awake to involuntary control during sleep or simply by increased respiratory regularity. In this study, we examined the effects of increased respiratory regularity induced by voluntary paced breathing on Hsi. We observed that Hsi increases in proportion to respiratory regularity regardless of whether it is caused voluntarily or involuntarily.
