3-Dimensional Humerus Statistical Shape Model for Making Artificial Shoulder Joint Design

(in English) Currently, the humeral head portion of the artificial shoulder joint is mostly designed to approximate a sphere or ellipse. However, it is hard to say that the design expresses the actual humeral head well. Although shape analysis in 2-D X-ray radiograph has been performed, 3-D shape analysis has not been conducted. Therefore, this research introduces a method of constructing a 3-D statistical shape model (SSM) of the humerus towards artificial shoulder joint design. The method first segments the humerus region from shoulder CT images, and determines the anatomical coordinate system of the segmented humerus region. The individual humerus regions are aligned using the determined anatomical coordinate system. 3-D SSM of the humerus is constructed by applying principal component analysis to the aligned humerus regions. The method for constructing 3-D SSM of the humerus is validated in eight subjects.
