Wide Area Multilateration (WAM) is a new aeronautical surveillance system that can provide more accurate and frequent aircraft positions than the conventional radars. For designing a set of WAM receiver positions (called a constellation), RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) predicted by DOP (Dilution of Precision) has been widely used.
However, this conventional technique is too optimistic because of neglecting signal losses due to co-channel interference. Therefore, the authors have proposed a WAM accuracy model that considers the effect of signal detection. By introducing the concept of stochastic constellation, the proposed model allows more realistic localization accuracy prediction. In this paper, truncated RMSE and truncated HDOP (Horizontal DOP), which are suitable expressions of the proposed model in coverage design, are proposed as an extension of the conventional RMSE and HDOP. The proposed model is validated by a numerical simulation. |
