[Invited Talk] Assessment methods for radio protection with respect to advanced wireless systems

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Currently research and development as well as standardization on the 5th mobile communication system (5G) have been actively conducted all over the world. Frequency bands above 6 GHz for 5G are considered in addition to those used for current mobile systems. From exposure assessment point of view, the power density should be used above 6 GHz as a measurement index while the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) has been used for near-field exposure up to 6 GHz. Basically, the power density can be obtained by measuring the electric field in the far-field. However, since it is expected that mobile devices that operate above 6 GHz will be used in close proximity to the human body, exposure assessment methods focusing on near-field exposure should be investigated. Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) systems for mobile phones, portable devices, home appliances, and electric vehicles (EV) have been paid attention. Especially WPT systems for mobile phones and EVs have been standardized by some international bodies such International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), respectively. The transmitted power in WPT systems is much higher than that emitted by conventional wireless devices, e.g., several kW for EV even though the employed frequency ranges are much lower, i.e., below 10 MHz. An exposure assessment at frequency range from several tens of kHz to tens of GHz has become more importants. In this paper, standardization activities with respect to evaluation of human exposure conducted by the IEC are introduced.
