Previous studies on video games suggest that the existence of competitive players increases motivation and enjoyment, which appear to reflect high engagement states. However, it is not clear whether similar effects are found when playing Virtual Reality (VR) video games. Visual information of other players in the real world is not identified when playing VR games. Therefore, the contribution of the existence of a competitor to the enthusiasm may be weaker in VR video games. We examined whether the existence of a competitor increases enthusiasm in such games. Participants played a VR racing game alone (single condition) or with a fake player (competitive condition), while their brain activity was measured by means of event-related potential (P300), which reflects the attention resource to the less frequently presented sound among two kinds of task-irrelevant auditory stimuli. Due to limited capacity of attentional resources, attention to the sound should be decreased if the existence of a competitor increases attention to the VR video game, hence the brain activity reflecting attention to the sound (i.e., the amplitude of P300) should be smaller. Results showed that the amplitude of P300 in the competitive condition was smaller than that in the single condition, suggesting that the playing with the competitor increased the attention resource to the video game. The subjective enjoyment and excitement in the competitive condition were higher than those in the single condition. These results suggest that the existence of a competitor encourages high engagement states in participants playing VR video games as well as conventional (non-VR) video games do, even if the physical information of competitive players in the real world is not identified. |
