A Development of Surge Resistant Fuse using Skin Effect

(in English) Current fuses, which are installed in safety circuits of electrical and electronic equipment for blocking overcurrents caused by short-circuit of the internal circuits. However, it is common that the fuses would be blown out by surges currents, which are generated by lightning or switching operation. Therefore, authors proposes a surge resistant fuse, which has double structure of inner and outer conductor, that could separate current by its frequency, with using a difference in skin effect (epidermal depth) of each conductor. The overcurrents of 50/60 Hz flow through inner conductor mainly, and the surge currents of 10 kHz - 1 MHz flow through the outer conductor mainly, that causes the fuse element which is applied to the inner conductor would not be blown by the surge currents. In this study, the effect of the proposed surge resistance fuse is evaluated by experiment and 3-D electromagnetic field simulation, whether the surge current can be separated or not. As a result, it was found that the proposed surge resistance fuse can separates the surge currents, which flow through the outer conductor mainly, and clarified that the proposed surge resistance fuse can protect the fuse element from the surge current.
