A Method of Designing Service Function Chaining with High Reliability

(in English) Adapting virtualization technologies to carrier networks, such as Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software-defined Networking (SDN), enables expensive dedicated hardware to be replaced with inexpensive general-purpose servers and networks to be constructed flexibly. Therefore, the advantages of declining investment (CAPEX) and starting network services quickly are expected. Service Function Chaining (SFC), one of service construction technologies in NFV, selects and orders some Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) deployed on the servers. The ordered set of VNFs is service chain. In service provision, the high reliability is basically ensured by redundantly service components, which include paths, devices and applications of the service. This approach is also adapted to service chains as duplicating ones, but an impact on the users is large if a VNF fails which is shared among multiple service chains, because of switching to all spare chains. This paper presents a method of designing service function chaining that can increase reliability of service chains while reducing the resources consumption. This method weights VNFs according to the number of user and the resources consumption, and selects only a VNF that has maximum weights as a backup target.
