In recent years, there has been a growing interest in stimulating the brain tissue non-invasively and locally for medical treatment. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive technique aimed to modulate brain excitability. The modulation is achieved by the application of weak current delivered to the brain via two electrodes placed on the scalp. Recently, tDCS has been applied to the cerebellum (ctDCS), toward its application to therapeutic intervention for patients with motor dysfunction. To investigate factors affecting ctDCS outcome as well as personalized stimulation strategy, we computed the electric field in the cerebellum using different electrode conditions in 18 realistic head models. As a result, we found that the size of the electrodes do not affect the electric field significantly, and the electric field distribution can be controlled by adjusting the electrode location. It was also found that the main anatomical factors affecting ctDCS current are the distance from the skin to the cerebellum, the volume of cerebrospinal fluid, etc. depending the target area of ctDCS. |
