Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We propose a single-flux-quantum (SFQ) based event-driven encoder by using a row-column readout architecture for a large-pixel superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SSPD) array. A row-column readout architecture allows reduction of the number of readout wiring to 2N for N x N-pixel SSPD array, which is effective to realize large-scale SSPD array. We designed an SFQ-based event-driven encoder with the input channel of 32 + 32, which can be applied to 32 x 32-pixel SSPD array. The SFQ encoder circuit outputs a digital code corresponding to the spatial information of the pixel that detected the photon for every photon detection event, indicating that the designed circuit can obtain not only the spatial information but also the timing information of photon detection. We reduced the critical currents of the Josephson junctions (JJs) to half value compared to the standard design. The required total bias currents are 170 mA, while the total number of JJs is 2780. We performed a stand-alone test of the fabricated circuit in liquid helium. We applied an electrical pulse from a pulse pattern generator at room temperature, and observe the output waveforms from the SFQ encoder. As a result, we obtained correct output data from the SFQ encoder for respective input ports. In this article, we report on the detail of the operation of the designed circuit and experimental results in liquid helium.
