Evaluation of Route Guidance for 3D Audio Navigation System for the Visually Impaired

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We have been studying a navigation system using 3D acoustics for visually impaired people. There dose exist systems that guide the optimal route using voice, but it is difficult to grasp the contents of guidance because voice guidance may be mixed with other noise in environments where there are many conversations such as crowds. Also, in the case of visually impaired people who can not accurately grasp the sense of distance, there was a problem of deviating from the intended path. These problems are thought to be improved by using 3D audio of the sinusoidal sound as the guidance sound. We aim to enable visually impaired people to walk accurately even with complicated routes using sound image localization capability. Specifically, using binaural simulation and head tracking, guide sounds are generated from the direction you want to guide the user to go in small steps. The system creates a new sound image at the next step when the user reaches the intermediate goal. This operation is repeated. The advantage of this system is that even if it is a simple sound signal, distance and azimuth information can be provided by 3D audio, so that no guided voice is required. In previous research, this system was evaluated by simulation. However, because the simulator moves in the virtual space, the subject himself does not move and there is no danger of obstacles. Thus, we could not confirm the problem in its actual use. In this paper, we implemented a 3D audio navigation system on a smartphone and conducted an experiment to evaluate whether it could guide the path in real space. As a result, we conclude that the 3D audio navigation system for visually impaired people is a very effective route guidance means that can be used practically.
