Voice change by the physical distance from a speaker to a target person in the evaluation of concordance of audio-visual stimuli -- Distance expression of voice --

(in English) Human change speech sound depending on the distance to the other person. We call "distance expression of voice" for phenomena. In this research, we prepared pictures of the physical distance from the camera to the other person (2 m, 4 m, 6 m, and 10 m) at the outside and inside of the room. In the experiment one, the speaker watched one of the picture in a sound-proof room. The speaker produce speech sound to the person in the picture on a computer screen, and these sounds were recorded. The fundamental frequency (fo) and the formant frequencies (F1, F2) were analyzed. The fos of the professionals and non-professionals were higher for the longer distance than the shorter distance. The F1 were higher for the longer distance compared with the shorter distance, on the other hand, the F2 were almost the same regardless the distance. In the experiment two, the listeners were asked to judge the speech sound with twelve adjectives. In the experiment three, the listeners were asked to judge the speech sound and its image at the same time. The professionals voice were judged concordance when their original images were consistent. The non-professionals were judged concordance when their original images were shorter distance. Professional speakers may express the distance adequately by their voice. Distance expressions of voice is mainly achieved by subjective loudness, higher fundamental frequency, however, more factors should be considered.
