Effect of rumor realization on emotion -- When "blank paper story" comes true --

(in English) We conducted a laboratory experiment investigating how encountering an anxiety-arousing rumor, and then entering a situation imitating that rumor, influences the emotions and rumor transmission intention of individuals. Forty-eight participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: they were asked to read an anxiety-inducing rumor about “a key to the toilet” or “blank paper” and then complete a questionnaire about the rumor. Blank sheets of paper were mixed in half way through the questionnaire. Participants’ pulse rate, rumor transmission intention, and state anxiety were compared between the conditions. Pulse rate did not significantly differ between rumors. However, transmission intention was marginally and state anxiety was significantly higher in the “blank paper” condition. These results suggest that realization of a rumor can make people more anxious and heightens their rumor transmission intention.
