Calligraphy has been popular among people in Japan, and has attracted more people around the world. For learning calligraphy, conventionally, a teacher shows to students how to write characters on a paper using a brush, and students repeat imitating the model characters by the teacher. Unfortunately, this method does not only need a teacher, but also is difficult in understanding the stroke order and speed of each character despite their importance. In this paper, we propose a calligraphy learning assistant system using the projection mapping. Projection mapping is a technology offering the augmented reality in a real environment, and has become available for daily use. This system allows self-learning of calligraphy while imitating the stroke order and speed of a teacher through: 1) recording the writing of a teacher, 2) converting it to projection mapping, and 3) practicing writing by following the movie projected on the paper. For evaluations, we implement the system using Raspberry Pi and an open-source software, and prepare the contents for five examples. Then, we ask 13 students in our group including non-Japanese students, to write the characters by this system and the conventional method. The results confirm that this system is better than the conventional method in writing characters well and improving motivations in learning calligraphy. |
