Software defined networking (SDN) technologies enable us to manage network services more flexibly. Distributed placement of controllers reduces response time of controllers and distributes load of controllers. However, it is hard to determine the placement of controllers by solving optimization problems. In this paper, we propose a salience-based controller placement approach. The “salience” value of a link is defined as the number of shortest path trees that traverse the link. We compare the performance of salience-based placement and betweenness-based placement. As a result, we found that, by placing controller functions on the nodes having many high-salient links, our approach shortens the average length of control paths and keeps the average load of controllers low. This fact is noticeable especially when links are strongly constrained by the distance. |
