[Special Talk] Overview of 8K UHDTV Satellite Broadcasting

(in English) NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) is going to launch the world's first 8K UHDTV satellite broadcasting in Japan in December 2018. The 8K UHDTV (Ultra High Definition Television) is a broadcasting medium featuring 16 times the number of pixels as HDTV and 22.2 multichannel sound to provide a highly realistic "you are there" sensation. Since 1995, NHK has been researching and developing 8K UHDTV as a next-generation broadcasting system to follow HDTV and has been active in specification studies, equipment development and technology standardization. In this paper, we describe an overview of the 8K satellite broadcasting system and our activities related to standardization, development of equipment, and its transmission technology.
