Dynamic Flow Control in Energy Efficient Hybrid Data Center Network "HOLST"

(in English) Switching power consumption reduction in data center networks (DCNs) is important. Therefore, introducing the optical switching network into DCNs is attractive. We have proposed a hybrid (electrical packet switching and optical circuit switching) DCN named " HOLST " which is using ultra high speed switching system in optical network. In the HOLST optical network, both MEMS optical switches switchable in millisecond order and PLZT optical switches switchable in nanosecond order are used. PLZT optical switches are suitable for time division multiplex slot switching communication due to ultra high speed switching. In HOLST, it is important to appropriately select a switching technology according to the flow size in order to reduce switching power consumption. We therefore proposed a flow classification method using hierarchical LRU (Least Recently Used) queues as a flow classification method according to the flow size. In this paper we review the outline of HOLST architecture and flow classification method, and we describe the control plane of HOLST as SDN (Software Defined Networking) which dynamically reconfigures flow paths according to the flow size. In the next, with respect to the flow classification method by the hierarchical LRU queue, we propose a method to dynamically change the threshold according to the correct classification rate. Finally, verification results of the power consumption reduction in the actual Data Center which is introduced the HOLST prototype system with the flow classification method using Hierarchical LRU queue are described.
