A Study on Wavelength-Reuse WDM-PON using Reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier and Fabry-Perot Etalon

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Wavelength-reuse using gain saturation of reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) has been proposed as a colorless technology for optical network unit (ONU) in WDM-PON, though this method cannot be applied to 10-Gbps class systems due to the slow response of gain saturation of RSOAs. In this paper, we experimentally studied a wavelength-reuse system where the modulation component of the downstream signal was suppressed in the ONU by using an RSOA assisted by a Fabry-Perot etalon (FP). We used a FP with a bandwidth of 1.5 GHz in full-width at half maximum and an RSOA composed of a travelling-wave semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and a Faraday rotator mirror (FRM). Experimental results showed that the bit error rate (BER) of the upstream signal was increased as compared with the previous reports employing two traveling-wave SOAs [5-6], and the requirement for the downstream signal became severe to suppress the modulation component. The minimum received power at ONU that achieves BER less than 10-4 was -13.5 dBm with the extinction ratio of the downstream signal of 4.0 dB. Comparing these values with the previous report [6], the minimum received power was increased by 1.5 dB while the extinction ratio was decreased by 2.6 dB. These differences would be attributed to the frequency dependence of downstream signal suppression caused by several meters of pigtail fibers connecting the travelling-wave SOA and the FRM.
