Two-dimensional grating couplers (2DGCs) typically used as the optical I/O interface on the silicon photonics receiver need to operate with a lightwave with an arbitrary polarization in a single mode fiber (SMF). 2DGCs typically have a polarization dependent loss (PDL) due to the fiber angle tilted to reduce the back reflections at the fiber/grating interface. We numerically analyzed the dependence of the PDL of 2DGCs as for the scatterer arrays and shapes by using the three three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD) method. The reduction of the PDL of 2DGCs was realized by using slanted arrays and cross-shaped scatterers. We experimentally demonstrated a PDL < 0.3 dB over a 60-nm-wide spectral range. The tendency of the PDL characteristics (< 0.3 dB over a 60-nmwide range) was maintained even when the half-etching depth of the 2DGC deviated in a 200 mm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. |
