In order to realize the energy-efficiency of wireless sensor networks, we have designed ROD-SAN (Radio-On-Demand Sensor and Actuator Networks), where a wake-up receiver is installed into each node. Each ROD-SAN node transmits a wake-up signal before every data transmission, which results in overhead causing the increase of energy consumption of each node. In order to reduce the overhead for wake-up control, this paper proposes data forwarding control which decides the destination of each data based on network topology and active/sleep state of neighboring nodes. While the existing OH (Overhearing) scheme can suppress the transmission of wake-up signal when detecting the active state of their destination, its efficiency is limited since it does not exploit the active neighbors of each node, which can relay data besides its destination. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a scheme called E-OH (Extended OH), where each node observes signals transmitted by its neighbors and transmits its data to one of neighbors without the transmission of wake-up signal when detecting their active state. Furthermore, in order to reduce the number of forwarding data and wake-up overhead, we propose a routing scheme, where data aggregation nodes are introduced to deliver data with small amount of data forwarding and wake-up overhead. We compare the performance of each OH scheme and routing schemes with and without data aggregation nodes by computer simulations, and investigate the effectiveness of each proposed scheme. |
