ID Allocation and Query Transfer Methods for Reducing Processing Load on Distributed Key Value Stores

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper proposes an ID allocation algorithm to equalize node load in distributed key value store (KVS). The paper also proposes a method for efficiently transferring queries using the characteristics of the allocation algorithm. When adding a node having IDs of powers of 2, the additional ID is arranged at a position dividing the area with the largest ID interval into two. Since the placement algorithm specifies the optimum position from multiple candidates, the load imbalance in node failure is minimized. Adjusting the number of IDs of additional nodes guarantees load equalization even when the number of nodes is not a power of 2. By setting the origin of the ID arrangement to 0, the high order bit of the query key hash value can specify the destination node. This characteristics leads the methods of routing table configuration, IP address setting and address resolution at destination nodes. The proposed method is effective because it can be applied to KVS of two kinds of OSS.
