For improving the reliability of optical wireless communications, the implementations of error correcting codes are investigated. As the typical modulation schemes used in optical wireless system using turbo code, which is one of the error correcting codes, pulse position modulation (PPM) and on-off keying (OOK) are well known. Although the transmission efficiency of OOK system is excellent, this system has an optimum decision level adjustment problem and a bit-slip problem. The PPM system does not have those problems, but the transmission efficiency becomes half of that of the OOK system. For solving the respective issues of OOK and PPM, Framed-DOOK, which can reduce background noise by taking difference, APPM, which combines amplitude shift keying (ASK) with OOK, and Hybrid PPM-OOK, which transmits signal using PPM and OOK simultaneously, have been proposed. In this presentation, the effective information rate (capacity) performances of the proposed systems are evaluated by computer simulation. As results, HPOS system, APPM system present the same bit error rate performance of the conventional PPM system, and have 1.5 times larger capacity than that of the conventional PPM system. For the tolerance to background noise, APPM system is the best of the 3 proposed systems. HPOS system shows the best performance at the tolerance to attenuation. In good communication environments (high transmitted power, low background noise, low attenuation), Framed-DOOK can achieve the highest effective information rate. |
