A Proposal of Color Quantization Method Taking Account of Saliency

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) One of the most popular limited-color images, graphic interchange format (GIF) image is used in various situations. The colors used in the limited-color images are called representative colors. In GIF, the maximum number of the representative colors is restricted to 256 colors. To generate the GIF image with small file size, it is necessary to decrease the number of the representative colors. However the salient colors in the original image are replaced by different representative colors in this case. In this report, we propose a color quantization method based on the saliency. In the proposed method, the salient colors are selected as representative colors preferentially by using the saliency as the weight. Through experiments, we verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.
