Prototype Development of Wireless LAN with Multiband Simultaneous Transmission and Its Experiment

(in English) The amount of traffic in wireless local area network (WLAN) is increasing due to expansion of Internet of things (IoT) applications and off-loading of cellular traffic. Therefore, we have been studying a WLAN system which simultaneously exploits multiple frequency bands to improve spectral efficiency.
We have developed an initial prototype for 2.4 and 5.2/5.3 GHz bands; once the transmitter obtains a transmission opportunity (TXOP) on a band, it judges whether it should immediately transmit a single-band frame of pends its transmission for a while to make multi-band transmission. The initial prototype makes this decision using a distribution of idle duration measured in advance.
In this paper, we introduce the tri-band prototype for 2.4 GHz, 5.2 GHz, and 5.6 GHz bands. The advanced prototype determines whether it pends its transmission with the aid of realtime prediction of upcoming busy/idle duration.
Through experimental evaluation, we confirm that the proposed WLAN improves a throughput performance by 3.4 times compared with conventional single-band WLAN under the crowded channel condition.
