The amount of traffic in wireless local area network (WLAN) is increasing due to expansion of Internet of things (IoT) applications and off-loading of cellular traffic. Therefore, we have been studying a WLAN system which simultaneously exploits multiple frequency bands to improve spectral efficiency.
We have developed an initial prototype for 2.4 and 5.2/5.3 GHz bands; once the transmitter obtains a transmission opportunity (TXOP) on a band, it judges whether it should immediately transmit a single-band frame of pends its transmission for a while to make multi-band transmission. The initial prototype makes this decision using a distribution of idle duration measured in advance.
In this paper, we introduce the tri-band prototype for 2.4 GHz, 5.2 GHz, and 5.6 GHz bands. The advanced prototype determines whether it pends its transmission with the aid of realtime prediction of upcoming busy/idle duration.
Through experimental evaluation, we confirm that the proposed WLAN improves a throughput performance by 3.4 times compared with conventional single-band WLAN under the crowded channel condition. |
