Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) How do we recall something from our memory? Underlying information processing for memory processing remains largely unclarified. Recently, many neuroscientists have tackled this difficult problem, that is neuronal machinery for memory. On the basis of the knowledge gained from electrophysiological studies of non-human primates, it is now well recognized that neurons in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex play a crucial role in memory retrieval of visual objects. However, it is still obscure how IT neurons interact with each other to construct neuronal circuits, how they communicate with other neurons in other cortical areas, and how their activities have a causal impact on memory processing. Here, I report on several recent findings on memory processing, revealed by studies using monkeys. I focus on the multiple spatial scales of memory circuits in the IT cortex; at the spatial scales of neurons, cortical layers, inter-areas, and whole-brain networks.
