Current Internet backbone routing is topology-based, which selects routes with the shortest AS-path length. Therefore, current routing methods may not be best in terms of communication quality. In this paper, we investigate whether quality-based routing improves communication quality. To reveal benefits of quality-based routing, we have developed a system measuring route quality on our multihomed AS. Utilizing our system, we measured RTT to 10,000 destinations across the internet using all available routes. Analysis shows 40% of destinations could improve their average RTT if the quality-based route was chosen. Route quality is found to depend on individual destination rather than overall time-based trends. |
