Quantitative evaluation of the femoral condylar shape in the knee joint with the discoid meniscus

(in English) In order to reduce the load working on the knee joint, two meniscuses are placed as soft tissue on the lateral and medial sides of the tibial joint surface. Normal meniscus has a crescent shape, but lateral meniscus rarely becomes discoid. Although the femoral condylar surface is reported to be flattened in the knees with discoid meniscus, such phenomenon has yet to be evaluated quantitatively. Then this study quantified the flatness of the femoral condylar surface in the following manner: 1) the contour of the subchondral bone was extracted in the midsagittal MR images of the lateral femoral condyle; 2) the position on the contour was normalized as 0 % - 100 % from the point contact with the most anterior point of the meniscus to the most proximal point, respectively; and 3) the radius of curvature was computed at every position (%) on the contour. Then the radius of curvature was compared between the knees with discoid meniscus (4 cases) and those with normal meniscus (8 cases). Consequently, the former knees were flattened significantly from 31 % to 41 % of the contour than the latter knees.
