Measurement of pedestrian crowds' heterogeneity by congestion level

(in English) The urbanization phenomenon has led to an increase of congestion in cities. Also considering the increase of elderly population, the heterogeneity of human crowds has become a relevant characteristic. This heterogeneity is expressed in a difference in walking speed which is a cause of congestion. Using conventional measures, quantifying the congestion caused by this phenomenon was not possible. In this research we present a novel definition for congestion in pedestrian crowds and use it to analyze an experiment involving a heterogeneous crowd composition. As a result, we found that a difference in walking speed indeed contributes to an increase in congestion.
