In this study, a spiking neural network model is examined to study how the balance between excitatory and inhibitory neurons (E/I balance) in the brain is related to the self-organization of connectivity between neurons and neuron groups. The model is composed of two neuron groups, each of which consists of excitatory and inhibitory spiking neurons. The number of the inhibitory neurons or the weights of the inhibitory synapses are used to control the E/I balance. Experimental results showed that strong connections formed and transfer entropy became large between the neuron groups when the E/I balance was close to a typical one (4:1). In contrast, an increase in the E/I ratio (i.e. weak inhibition) resulted in asymmetric connections and small transfer entropy between the neuron groups. |
