Spreading Factor Selection Method for Multiple Gateways Reception in LoRaWAN

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) For the IoT (Internet of Things), it is required to have low cost device and simple network construc- tion. As a solution to these problems, a new wireless network called LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network), which enables long distance, low power communication, is attracting attention. LoRaWAN enables power-saving communication by using Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) as the physical layer and pure ALOHA as the MAC layer protocol. However, when the number of terminals in the network increases, packet collisions frequently happen, leading to a decrease in overall network throughput. To solve this problem, it has been proposed to replace the pure ALOHA protocol by replacing Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA/CA: Carrier Sense Multiple Access / Collision Avoidance). Furthermore, the packet delivery rate (PDR) performance can be improved by receiving signals by multiple gateways (GWs). In this paper, we evaluate the impact of the spreading factor (SF) on the improvement of LoRaWAN with multiple GWs. When high SF is used, it has high receiver sensitivity and hence can be received by multiple GWs. However, since the transmission time of information becomes long, it is exposed to more interference from other terminals. Therefore, it indicates that the PDR performance cannot be improved.
