Electromagnetic Analysis Attacks on an ASIC Implementation of a Ring-Oscillator PUF

(in English) Physically unclonable functions (PUFs) are assumed to provide high tamper resistance against counterfeits and hardware attacks, since the PUF extracts inherent physical properties from random and uncontrollable variations in manufacturing. Meanwhile, vulnerabilities against physically and mathematically attacks have been reported so far. This paper focuses on security evaluation of a ring-oscillator PUF (RO PUF) against electromagnetic analysis (EMA) attacks. We designed a RO PUF, which is reduced power consumption to enhance an EMA resistance, with 180nm CMOS process. We evaluated the EMA resistance of the fabricated chip and found a newly vulnerability of cloning RO PUF. In experimental results, simple electromagnetic analysis attacks based on geometric leak, which exposed interval information between circuits, revealed 94.2% responses without identifying the ring oscillators. We show how responses of the RO PUF are read from measured electromagnetic traces.
