The effect of visual degradation on emotion perception and phoneme perception

(in English) We investigated how visual degradation affects audiovisual integration. In the present experiment, native Japanese speakers were asked to perform both emotion perception and phoneme perception tasks, in which emotional/phonemic auditory and visual information were manipulated (congruent vs. incongruent). We employed Gaussian blurring technique to manipulate the levels of visual degradation. The results showed that, when the visual information was clear, both emotion and phoneme judgment responses were oriented to visual modality under the audiovisual incongruent condition. As the visual information was degraded, however, the responses became oriented to auditory modality. These results indicate that audiovisual integration is modulated by reliability of sensory input.
