Extracting action expressions for person perception

(in English) While involving with others, we predict their behaviors or infer their intensions from their gesture and the speech and behavior. For such a function to be established, it is possible that there is a cognitive structure that connects the cognition of others’ actions and their intentions. In fact, it has been clarified that there are some basic dimensions as a cognitive framework for recognizing the character of others. In addition, an experiment using functional MRI revealed that people use information about the personality traits of others when predicting the other’s behaviors. In the present study, in order to clarify the cognitive structure of interpersonal cognition, we investigated the relationship between impressions of others and cognition of others’ actions. By using the questionnaire, we collected descriptions of episodes related to impressions of others. Then, expressions of actions were extracted from the descriptions. As a result of correspondence analysis, action expressions related to specific personality traits were extracted. This suggests that there is a cognitive structure between impressions of others and the cognition of others’ behaviors.
