Elastic Optical Switching Networks Managed by Mets-Slot Schemes

(in English) The elastic optical network technology is significant because it flexibly provides diverse bandwidths. To build an elastic optical network, an optical switching network is necessary as a component of a telecommunication node. This switching network must interconnect data streams, which occupy various numbers of consecutive FSUs (Frequency Slot Units) between optical fibers. Moreover, the switching network must be nonblocking; any permutations should be achievable between input and output FSUs. As elastic optical switching networks, past studies have investigated W–S–W (W: wavelength switch, S: space switch) architectures. For these architectures, the strictly nonblocking (SNB) and wide sense nonblocking (WSNB) conditions have been shown. However, these conditions suggest that a considerably large number of FSUs are necessary on optical fibers between wavelength and space switches. Meanwhile, the number of FSUs required for nonblocking connections is efficiently reduced by introducing meta-slots. A meta-slot is defined as a fixed frequency range that covers one or more FSU(s). This concept effectively prevents existing narrow band connections from blocking a newly requested wide band connection. This article addresses various characteristics of the meta-slot schemes.
