Recently, Ka-band broadband communication services with capacities of over 100–1000 Gbps have been planned by several satellite business operators. Satellite laser communication technologies with a CubeSat have been developed. In this paper, the research and development of space communications technology in the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) are introduced. The fourth mid-term research plan for research and development at NICT started in April 2016 and lasts for five years. The organizational structure has been reorganized and the former Space Communication Systems Laboratory is now called the Space Communications Laboratory. A summary of the research and development in the Space Communications Laboratory is presented. |
