Volcano structured field emitter array for large current

(in English) We have developed a Volcano-structured double gate Spindt-type field emitter arrays (VDGS-FEA). It can focus the electron beam without significant degradation of emission current. It was, however, difficult to operate at a high current more than 1 A/tip due to melt down by Joule heating. This is because the emitter material is restricted to Ni due to the unique fabrication method. We tried to use Ni-Mo alloy (Ni-Mo alloy) as emitter material for high current applications such as traveling wave tube (TWT). We compared emission characteristics between Ni and Ni-Mo alloy FEA. Ni FEA was damaged and broken when it emitted more than 1A/tip. On the other hand, Ni-Mo alloy FEA having 1000 tips reached a large emission current of about 1 mA. Lifetime test revealed that no degradation was observed at an emission current of more than 0.1 mA for 70 hours in the case of Ni-Mo alloy FEA having 1000-tips. We think that Ni-Mo alloy emitter will be a good solution for achieving high current operation and beam focusing simultaneously.
