Study on Underwater Acoustic Communication using Time-Reversal DFE

In underwater acoustic communication, effects of multipath interferences and Doppler shift are much larger than those in radio communication in air, and available bandwidth is much narrower. To overcome these problems, time-reversal decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is effective especially in horizontal communication because multipath signals are collected and utilized. Additionally, adaptive time reversal was proposed to suppress co-channel or multiuser interference as well as multipath interference by using the focusing effect. In this study, adaptive passive time-reversal DFE is applied to multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) communication and multiuser communication, and its effectiveness is investigated in simulation, tank experiment, and at-sea experiment. As results, in tank experiment of MIMO communication, in case of using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), it is impossible to increase the number of MIMO transmitter channels. In the meantime, in case of using adaptive passive time-reversal DFE, the spectral efficiency is not degraded as increasing the number of channel and it is possible to achieve 5×12 MIMO communication at the efficiency of 16.7bps/Hz. In at-sea experiment for multiuser communication, it was demonstrated that adaptive passive time-reversal DFE can realize multiuser communication with a transmitter moving at the velocity of 2 knots. |
