Animal behavior response is elicited by integrating multiple sensory information. However, a certain sense is potentially dominant during particular conditions. Glass catfish has an ability of passive electric sense and avoids sinusoidal electric stimulation around 10 Hz of the stimulation frequency in a dark room. Vision is, further, an important sense for glass catfish. We investigated interaction of vision and electric sense during sinusoidal electric stimulation in glass catfish. In the present study, avoidance behavior in response to sinusoidal electric stimulation was observed in a bright room or a dark room. The avoidance behavior was the intensity- and frequency-dependent. In the dark room, the avoidance behavior was induced by lower stimulus intensity compared to the bright room. The avoidance behavior was induced by 500 nApp or higher in the bright room, while 250 nApp was enough in the dark room. Those results indicate that the passive electrolocation was sensitive under the low-visibility condition in glass catfish, but the electric sense was suppressed by vision in the visible condition. |
