Improvement of TDOA Positioning Error by Using Target Range Observations

(in English) TDOA (Time Difference of Arrival) localization estimates a target position from arrival time differences of radio signals by detecting the signals in a number of ground receivers. TDOA has advantages as being able to build a localization system easily, by reason of not require to detect a signal transmission time on the target side. On the other hand, TDOA has a challenge as positioning error increases rapidly outside the receiver constellation. By the way, if a TDOA system can get a range between a reference receiver and the target, it is possible for the system to utilize TOA (Time of Arrival) localization by complementing the target range to the TDOA. This paper considers a TOA localization method which converts each range difference to the target range. As the result, it became clear that the TOA method could achieve better positioning accuracy than its TDOA. And it was indicated by computer simulation that the TOA method could improve the TDOA challenge.
