Peripersonal space during active and passive self-motion

(in English) A space immediately around the body, known as peripersonal space (PPS), plays an important role in our interactions with external environments. This space is represented by specific bi- or tri-modal neurons in the brain, so that strong multisensory interaction behaviorally occurs in this space. Several studies have shown that the range of PPS can expand in the direction of self-motion. However, little is known about which self-motion cues contribute to this PPS expansion during self-motion. Here, we investigate whether active and passive self-motion differentially affect PPS. Participants experienced illusory forward self-motion by large-field visual motion presented through a head-mounted display. They pedaled an exercise bike while observing the visual motion in an active condition, while they did not in a passive condition. During self-motion, a visual probe approached the participants from several distances. We defined PPS as the farthest distance that the visual probe facilitated tactile detection. The results revealed that the visual probe significantly facilitated the tactile detection at all distance condition regardless of the self-motion conditions, suggesting that PPS expand during self-motion. Moreover, the facilitation was larger for the active than passive conditions, suggesting that signals related to active self-motion such as (efference copy of) motor commands and proprioception can contribute to PPS expansion.
