We propose a retardation shift keying (RSK), which is a modulation method using the phase difference between two orthogonal polarization of light waves (Retardation), and direct-detection circuit for RSK. Since the RSK-modulated light uses only the relative phase difference between the two polarized waves without using the absolute phase of the light, the receiver does not need local light source and direct detection is possible. Considering the rotation of the polarization direction in transmission fiber, we perform theoretical calculations using the Jones vector and experimental studies. We show the RSK signal can be detected independently on the polarization rotation in the transmission fiber if we use binary RSK with two states of right and left circular polarization. |
