An On-line Visual Feedback System for Assisting Piano Practice

(in English) “Awareness” plays an essential role in doing practice for acquiring motor skills, such as sports and music instrument performance. Aiming to assist the practice of piano playing by inducing “helpful awareness”, the authors implemented a real-time visual feedback system of the motion of piano actions and examined its effect experimentally. We asked three participants to do practice of several technical subjects on timbre control using the proposed system. All participants reported that they acquired some new findings (i.e., awareness) with the proposed system, which could not been noticed without the system. Especially, the system led some participants to listen to the sound more carefully and attentively, suggesting that the proposed system may be effective for cultivating the listening ability of the piano students.
