In order to accommodate huge traffic on a train, millimeter-wave communication systems using a mobile relay has attracted attention. The relay mounted on the train communicates with a ground base station along rail line using millimeter-wave bands. The base station can cover long distance by using an adaptive beamforming technique that control a narrow beam dynamically. On the other hand, if beam direction is fixed, signal strength might be degraded severely due to beam misalignment e.g. in curved line environment, but it is easy to implement. In this paper, we propose a base station placement design method to minimize the number of base stations required to cover an entire rail line and evaluate both beamforming techniques from the viewpoint of the required number of base stations. The evaluation results where real Japanese bullet train lines were considered demonstrate that the entire line can be covered with about 60% less base stations by using the adaptive beamforming technique. |
