We investigated the origin of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in full-Heusler alloy Co_2FeSi(CFS)/MgO bilayers in which CFS is expected as half-metallic ferromagnets. From analysis of CFS-thickness dependence of magnetic properties, the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant of the bulk contribution was found to be positive in a wide range of CFS-thickness from 0.4 nm to 1.4 nm and was drastically increased in less than 0.7 nm. The cross-sectional structures of these samples were observed by a scanning transmission electron microscope. Crystalized CFS layers were observed even in ultrathin film region. However, no significant difference was not observed in around 0.7 nm. Surprisingly, the atomic distance for out-of-plane direction was much larger in 1.4 nm thick CFS layer compared to calculated value based on the expected epitaxial relationship. In addition, the interdiffusion of Si was confirmed from CFS layers to buffer layers, suggesting non-stoichiometric composition of CFS layers. |
