[Invited Talk] Fixational eye movement and visual information processing

(in English) The first stage of visual processing, the photo processing by photo-cells (rod and cone) is affected by eye movement. Even if the observers notice that they fixate their eyes on a specific visual target, the eye moves unconsciously. This is referred as fixational eye movement (FEM), in which three types, microsaccades, drift, and tremor are known. However, the detail characteristic of FEM is not known mainly due to its technical difficulty to measure its size. Here, we report the development of such attempt by devising the hardware system of optical device as well as analyzing algorithm. We used the motion detection of video images (Video OcculoGraphy:VOG) analyzed by the image motion tracking algorithm of SURF (Speed Up Robust Feature). We found the detailed characteristic of both tremor and drift between frequency order of 10 to 120 Hz, as well as their size between 0.1 to 10th or arc-minutes of arc, together with micro saccades. It is also found that there exists micro-meter order head movement, whose components corresponding to micro-saccades and drifts in terms of size.
