Measurement of Spatial Distribution of Fiber Birefringence by Coherent Heterodyne Detection of Rayleigth Backscattered Light

(in English) Since the coherent technology uses the phase information of light, it can be applied to various optical measurement technology. The authors have used this technology to observe the backscattered light in an optical fiber and perform phase characteristics analysis. We have shown previously that the coherent heterodyne detection can measure the birefringence of the optical fiber by measuring the phase of the coherent heterodyne-detected backscattered light. In this paper, we describe successful results of further development of this technology. We have performed the measurement of the spatial distribution of optical fiber birefringence with respect to the fiber distance. This measurement method has a feature that we can measure in an extremely short time as compared with the conventional method.
