In recent years, there has been a growing interest in focal brain neuromodulation in a non-invasive manner for medical treatment. In transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) a weak electric current is injected via electrodes attached to the scalp to modulate the cortical excitability. This technique has been shown to be effective as an adjunctive strategy in stroke rehabilitation. Up to now, a number of studies have focused on the area of the hand primary motor cortex. However, few experiments have been conducted on the area that controls the leg motor function partially due to the lack of an effective electrode montage definition for this region. One reason would be the anatomical complexity of the head and individual differences in particular for the location of the leg primary motor cortex. One approach is to employ computational modelling to determine the electrode montage that is suitable to target the leg primary motor cortex. In this study, eighteen individualized head models were used to calculate the electric fields generated from electrodes attached at various positions. The electric field distributions are compared to investigate the effective electrode montage for stimulation of the leg primary motor cortex and supplementary motor areas at the group level. |
